A local fast food that you should definitely check out when you visit Okinawa. A&W—a hamburger chain hailing from America that has long been a favorite of Okinawa locals. The draw of A&W is not only the wide variety of menu items available, but also the unique “drive-in” ordering style.
While we were on the road, we stopped in for lunch at “A&W Makiminato,” famous for its huge symbolic American signboard.
When you arrive at the restaurant, first, park your car in an available space.
Once you park your car, find the item you want to order from the menu list located next to the window. There are no employees waiting for you, and this is the appeal of the drive-in style—take your time to select what you want at your own pace.
More than just hamburgers, hot dogs and sandwiches are also available, along with a great variety of other items. Sides include potato chips, onion fries, and Super Poutine, a fried variety of the classic Canadian poutine—choosing what to try can be so tricky.
Once you have decided on what to get, press the button in front of the menu board. An employee in the store will speak to you over the speaker, so tell them your order.
After ordering, wait for a while and they will bring your items to your car. After paying the bill in the car, sit back and tuck into a freshly prepared hot meal right away. Feel free to eat in your car in the parking lot, or depart for your next destination. Drive-ins make it so easy!

Here is my order. Everything was so tasty—the addictive Coney Burger filled with a generous amount of original Coney sauce, thick-sliced and crispy Homemade Potato Chips, and Super Fries that are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside!
A&W’s specialty drink “Root Beer” is a must-try at least once at A&W. It is a non-alcoholic carbonated beverage that looks just like cola. It is made from about 14 or more medicinal herbs, and has a distinct, poultice-like scent. While it may not suit everyone’s palate, many fans find the flavor addictive.
