Recommended for first-time visitors to Kyushu, this two-day plan lets you enjoy a day of shopping and fine dining in Hakata followed by some serious relaxation in the hot springs of Yufuin.

Day 1

Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine

  • TIME NEEDED:1 hour

This shrine is famous for housing the god of learning. Souvenir shops line the street in front of the shrine. The regional specialty is the sweet umegae-mochi, which you can eat freshly fried.

JR Hakata City

Inside of the station building, you can find popular stores like Tokyu Hands and Hakata Hankyu. There are also a wide range of eating and drinking establishments. Take some time to relax on the rooftop terrace and spacious garden before heading to your next stop.

Canal City Hakata

Here you can find a wide selection of stores carrying the latest in apparel, household and interior goods, and unique gifts. There are restaurants as well should you need some refreshments.

ICHIRAN Tenjin

This restaurant serves thin Hakata ramen noodles with tonkotsu pork bone broth. The counter of this ramen shop has been divided by partitions to create private ramen-eating spaces for each customer.

Save some room to try eating at one of Fukuoka's famous yatai.

Day 2

Hakata Station

Depart for Yufuin on the tourist train “Yufuin no Mori” leaving from Hakata Station. Enjoy the scenery from the observation car.

Cafe Tenjo-sajiki

A chic cafe located on the grounds of a ryokan, or Japanese inn.

This is a store located on the Yu no Tsubo Road specializing in tofu. Try their popular tofu gelato!

Kotokotoya's jams contain no artificial coloring or flavors. The small jars make perfect souvenirs.

Hakata Station

Notes

We recommend using the tourist train “Yufuin no Mori” to travel between Hakata and Yufuin. The train makes only 3 round trips a day, so check the schedule ahead of time. If the times don't work for your schedule, you can also catch the JR limited express, or the highway bus (2,880 yen one way).

Lake Kinrin

This mysterious lake is fed by both hot and cold underground springs.
