Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival

博多祇園山笠

 

 

People carry showy Yamakasa floats decorated with dolls and parade through town.

This is a festival held by the Kushida Shrine. Men run around carrying the massive Yamakasa floats, which are said to be the vehicles of the gods. The festival is held yearly in July, and this is the busiest time of the year for Hakata.
