Air Travel

Japan's airline companies include the Japan Airlines (JAL) Group, the All Nippon Airways (ANA) Group, Skymark Airlines, AIR DO, Solaseed Air, StarFlyer, Ibex Airlines, Fuji Dream Airlines, Peach Aviation, SpringJapan, and Valilla Air. 

Almost all of Japan's international flights go through Japan's major airports. 
Narita International Airport and Tokyo International Airport (Haneda) are located outside of Tokyo. Chubu Centrair International Airport is located outside of Nagoya, and Kansai International Airport and Osaka International Airport (Itami) are located outside of Osaka. 

The next largest airports are the New Chitose Airport in Hokkaido, Sendai Airport in Miyagi, Fukuoka Airport in Fukuoka, and Naha Airport in Okinawa. Other airports that offer short-distance service to destinations such as Taiwan, Korea, and China are Aomori Airport in Aomori, Akita Airport in Akita, Fukushima Airport in Fukushima, Ibaraki Airport in Ibaraki, Niigata Airport in Niigata, Toyama Airport in Toyama, Komatsu Airport in Ishikawa, Shizuoka Airport in Shizuoka, Yonago Kitaro Airport in Shimane, Okayama Airport in Okayama, Hiroshima Airport in Hiroshima, Yamaguchi Ube Airport in Yamaguchi, Takamatsu Airport in Kagawa, Matsuyama Airport in Ehime, Kitakyushu Airport in Fukuoka, Saga Airport in Saga, Kumamoto Airport in Kumamoto, Oita Airport in Oita, Miyazaki Airport in Miyazaki, Nagasaki Airport in Nagasaki, and Kagoshima Airport in Kagoshima. Every airport offers flights to different destinations on different days, so be sure to do your research in advance. Charter flights may use airports not mentioned above. You can also catch domestic flights to destinations in regional areas and on remote islands.
 

Narita International Airport Information

Narita International Airport is located approximately 60 kilometers east of Tokyo in Chiba Prefecture. The airport has three terminals. Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 both have train stations inside. The station inside Terminal 1 is called Narita Airport Station; the station inside Terminal 2 is Airport Terminal 2 Station. Both terminals also have bus stations. 

There are a few ways to get to Terminal 3. If you are going there from Terminal 2, you can either walk or take a free shuttle bus to Terminal 3. This will take about 10 to 15 minutes. If you are traveling to Terminal 3 by highway bus or taxi, you will be dropped off at the Terminal 3 Bus Stops / Taxi Stands. From there it is a 2 to 6 minute walk to the terminal.

Terminal 1

Restaurants
With 33 restaurants to choose from in the arrival area, you can find a variety of foods such as soba and udon noodles, donburi, ramen, curry, and Thai dishes. There's also a conveyor belt sushi restaurant called Kaisen Misakiko. The restaurants are generally open from 7:30am to around 9:00pm. In the departure area, there are restaurants serving sushi and Japanese dishes. They are open from 8:00am to around 8:30pm.

Stores
There are stores selling Japanese tea, airport goods, rice snacks, clothes, eye glasses, various Japanese souvenirs, and books as well as a convenience store. These stores are open from 8:00am to around 8:00pm.

Showers
On the 2nd floor of the Central Building, there are 8 private booth-type shower rooms. They are available from 6:30am to around 8:30pm. It costs 1,030 yen for the first 30 minutes.

Coin-operated Internet Terminals
You can access the Internet from a PC at the rate of 100 yen/10 minutes from terminals located on the 4th floor (3 in the South Wing, 2 in the North Wing) and the 1st floor (3 in the North Wing).

Business and Travel Support Center
You can find a business and travel support center on the 5th floor of the Central Building. Copy machines and internet connections are available from 7:00am to 9:00pm. 

Terminal 2

Restaurants
There are 24 stores serving a variety of food such as tonkatsu (breaded, deep-fried pork cutlet), sushi, soba, and set meals in the arrival area. These restaurants are generally open from 7:00am to 9:00pm. The restaurants in the departure area mainly serve light meals. They are usually open from 8:00am to 9:00pm.

Stores
There are stores selling Japanese sweets, Japanese food products, Kyoto’s artistic handicrafts, clothes, accessories, and books-- perfect for last minute souvenirs! They are open from 7:30am to around 9:00pm.

Showers
There are four private shower rooms available for use between 7:00am~9:00pm on the 3F of the satelite area of Terminal 2. At the rate of 1,030 yen for the first 30 minutes.

Coin-operated Internet Terminals
In Terminal 2, you can find these on the 3rd floor of the Main Building (3 in the Rendezvous Plaza and 1 additional terminal) and 2nd floor of the Main Building (2 terminals). It costs 100 yen per 10 minutes.

PC Desks
Desks with power outlets (AC 100 volts) and lighting are available on the 3rd floor of the Main Building (departure lobby). Laptops may be brought in and used here at no charge.

Terminal 3

Restaurants
Excluding the restaurants located in the departure area, you have several restaurants to choose from that serve Japanese meals such as sushi, udon, rice bowls, and okonomiyaki. These restaurants are generally open from 7:30am until about 9:30pm. In the departure area, there is a cafe that is open from 6:30am until about 9:30pm.

Stores
There are duty-free shops selling goods such as handbags, watches, medicines, and beauty products. There is also a convenience store. These stores are generally open from 8:00am to about 9:00pm.

Prayer Room
There are two prayer rooms located on the second and third floors of the terminal in the area after outbound passport control.

Wireless LAN PCs and smartphones can be connected to free WiFi throughout Terminals 1 and 2. (Signal may be weak in some areas.)

Tourist information counters are located on the 1st floor of the Central Building (arrival lobby) in Terminal 1 and the 1st floor of the Main Building in Terminal 2 (arrival lobby). They provide tourist information to international visitors. They are open from 8:00am to 8:00pm.

Tokyo International Airport (Haneda Airport) Information

Tokyo International Airport, more commonly known as Haneda Airport, is located approximately 3o minutes by car from central Tokyo. The airport has three terminals. Domestic flights are primarily handled by Terminals 1 and 2 while international flights are handled by the International Terminal. Each terminal has an airport station and an airport limousine bus station.

Edo Koji
While you're waiting for your flight, head to the fourth floor of Haneda Airport's International Terminal and visit the "Edo Koji," a dining and shopping area modeled after an Edo period townscape. 

Restaurants
There are 30 restaurants located in the arrival area of the International Terminal. You will have your choice of a variety of foods such as sushi, ramen, sukiyaki, yakiniku, oden, yakitori, and udon. These restaurants are generally open from 7:00am to 10:00pm. In the departure area, there are restaurants serving ramen, cafe, and so on. Many of the restaurants in the departure area are open 24 hours. 
 
Shops
There are a total of 31 shops that sell things like Japanese miscellaneous goods, Japanese sweets, Japanese souvenirs, travel goods, and clothes. They are open from 8:00am to around 10:00pm.

Showers
There are 15 shower booths available 24 hours in the arrival lobby on the second floor. The price to use the showers is 1,030 yen for the first 30 minutes. 

Coin-operated Internet Terminals
There are several locations throughout the airport at which you can access the Internet from a PC. The rate to use the Internet is 100 yen per 10 minutes.

PC Desks 
Haneda Airport has desks with power outlets where you can use your own laptop. There are two banks of desk on the first, second, and third floors and one on the fifth. Wireless LAN is also available.

Chubu Centrair International Airport Information

Chubu Centrair International Airport is an international airport built on an artifical island in Ise Bay, Tokoname City in Aichi Prefecture. Because it is located in the middle of Japan, it is a convenient gateway for travel all over Japan. Using the Meitetsu train line, you can get to Chubu Centrair from Nagoya in just under a half hour via the Meitetsu train line.

The Departures Lobby for both International and Domestic routes is on the third floor of the Passenger Terminal Building. The Arrivals Lobby is on the second floor of the Passenger Terminal Building.

The Central Japan International Airport Station is located on the second floor of the Access Plaza. From here, you can take either the Meitetsu Ltd. Express (runs from 5:00am until midnight) or the Airport Rapid Limited Express μ-SKY (pronounced “moo-sky;” runs from 7:00am until 11:00pm). Please note that if you used the μ-SKY, an additional charge of 360 yen will be added to your fare.

By Bus 
The airport bus station is located on the first floor of the Access Plaza. From here, you can take the Centrair Limousine bus to the Sakae / Fushimi area of Nagoya City and Nagoya Bus Center. There are four buses per day, and the ride takes about 55~81 minutes depending on your destination. Adult fare is 1,200 yen.

There is also bus service to the following areas from the airport:

Toyota City (21 buses departing daily between 8am and 10pm; 80 min.; 1,750 yen)
Okazaki Station (10 buses departing daily between10am and 10pm; 72 min.; 1,750 yen)

By High-Speed Boat
You can also use a high-speed boat to travel to and from the airport! The dock is about a 15 minute walk from the Access Plaza via a designated walkway.

Centrair has Internet corners where you can either use one of their Internet-connected PCs free of charge or connect your own laptop a LAN cable, also free of charge. There are also outlets here for charging your device. Internet corners are located in the Internation Flight and Domestic Flight restricted areas (five areas in International Flights and six areas in Domestic Flights).

Kansai International Airport Information

Kansai International Airport is an international airport built on an artificial island in Osaka Bay, 5 km off the coast of Senshu. The airport has two terminals. Terminal 1 handles both domestic and international flights using a "sandwich layout" where the the domestic departures and arrives on the second floor are "sandwiched" between the international departures on the fourth floor and the international arrivals on the first floor. Terminal 2 is used exclusively for LCCs, or Low Cost Carriers. While the airport has one train station, bus stops are located both at Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.

2) Transportation from the Airport

To Osaka Station (Umeda)

  • Approximately 1 hr. 5 min. from Kansai Airport Station on the JR Airport Rapid Service (Osaka-bound). Runs 2 to 4 times/hr. from 8:00AM to 11:00PM. Costs 1,190 yen.
  • ​Approximately 50 min. to 1 hr. via the airport shuttle bus. Runs 1 to 3 times/hr. from 6:00AM to 2:00AM the following morning. Costs 1,550 yen.

To Namba (OCAT, JR Namba)
  • Approximately 34 to 39 min. from Kansai Airport Station on the Nankai Rapid Line. Runs 1 to 2 times/hr. from 6:00AM to 11:00PM. Costs 1,430 yen (train ticket 920 yen + express ticket 510 yen).
  • Approximately 50 min. to Namba (OCAT) via an airport shuttle bus. Runs 1 to 2 times/hr. from 6:00AM to 11:00PM. Costs 1,050 yen.
To Tennoji (Abeno Harukas)
  • Approximately 30 min. from Kansai Airport Station on the JR Airport Express "HARUKA”. Runs 1 to 2 times/hr. from 6:00AM to 11:00PM. Costs 1,710 yen (train ticket 1,060 yen + free seating express ticket 650 yen).
  • The JR Airport Rapid Service (Osaka-bound or Tennoji-bound) takes around 50 min. and runs 2 to 4 times/hr. from 8:00AM to midnight. Costs 1,060 yen.
  • The airport shuttle bus takes around 55 min. to 1 hr. to get to Abeno Harukas (Osaka Marriott Miyako Hotel). Runs approximately 1 time/hr. from 7:00AM to 8:00PM. Costs 1,500 yen.
To USJ (Universal Studios Japan)
  • Take the JR Airport Rapid Service (Osaka-bound) from Kansai Airport Station to Nishikujo Station. Change trains there to the JR Yumesaki Line to get to Universal-City Station. Runs 2 to 4 times/hr. from 8:00AM to 11:00PM. Costs 1,190 yen. Takes approximately 1 hr. 15 min.
  • The airport shuttle bus takes approximately 1 hr. 10 min. to 1 hr. 20 min. to Universal Studios Japan. Runs 9 times/day from 9:00AM to 10:00PM. Costs 1,550 yen. (Some buses only stop at Universal Citywalk Osaka).
To Kyoto Station
  • Approximately 1hr. 15 min. from Kansai Airport Station on the JR Airport Express "HARUKA”. Runs 1 to 2 times/hr. from 6:00AM to 11:00PM. Costs 2,850 yen (train ticket 1,880 yen + free seating express ticket 970 yen).
  • The airport shuttle bus takes approximately 1 hr. 25 min. to reach the Hachijo Exit of Kyoto Station. Runs 1 to 2 times/hr. from 6:00AM to midnight. Costs 2,550 yen.

3) Money Exchange / ATM

●Terminal 1
[Bank]
The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ is located on 2F (North). The adjacent World Currency Shop, open from 8:30AM to 6:00PM, exchanges foreign currencies (closed during New Year holidays).

[Exchange Counters]
Terminal 1 has 6 exchange counters on 4F, 5 on 1F floor, 6 in the departure area after passing through immigration,1 more in front of the ticket gates of the Kansai Airport Station (Nankai Line).

[ATM]
SMBC TRUST Bank ATMs and Seven Bank ATMs are the only ATMs in Terminal 1 that accept credit cards issued overseas.
・SMBC TRUST Bank ATMs …Located on the 1F (North). Available 24 hr.
・Seven Bank ATMs … 4 locations in Terminal 1: 1F (North), 2F (South), 4F (Center), as well as  in the International Departures area (North) on 3F. Available 24 hr.     

●Terminal 2

The Terminal 2 building has 2 exchange counters on 1F and one more in the departure area after passing through immigration.

Seven Bank ATMs are the only ATMs in Terminal 2 that accept credit cards issued overseas.

Daiso Kansai Airport Shop
A hundred-yen store with a wide range of products from essential travel goods to convenient daily necessities and maybe even a small souvenir or two. Location: Terminal 1, 3F; Hours: 7:00AM to 9:30PM; Open year round

KYOTO CRAFT MART
A select Japanese souvenir store that selects fantastic items from Kyoto including folding fans, kokeshi dolls, furoshiki wrapping cloth and other small accessories done in a traditional Japanese design.
Location: Terminal 1, 3rd floor; Hours: 7:00AM to 9:30PM; Open year round

551 HORAI
Osaka's famous “Butaman” steamed meat buns have a sumptuous amount of minced pork meat and onion filled inside. Grab one as a snack or enjoy a leisurely dinner in the restaurant. 
 Location: Terminal 1, 2F; Hours: 7:00AM to 10:00PM (9:15PM LO)
 
Takomasa
A famous takoyaki shop that has its main location in Osaka Dotonbori. Watch as each individual takoyaki dumpling is cooked on a copper grill plate. Yakisoba noodles and okonomiyaki savoury pancakes are two other popular items in addition to their Hiden Shoyu-aji Takoyaki and Akashiyaki takoyaki dumplings.

Shower Room
Only available in the Terminal 1 building.
・KIX Airport Lounge (2F North Wing)… Shower rooms inside the KIX Airport Lounge (Five shower rooms in total). Both the lounge and showers available 24 hr./day. 510 yen/15 min. for the shower only, 310 yen/15 min. for lounge use. Towels from 216 yen.
・Shower Room (Center of the Gate Area for International Flights)…24 hr., 600 yen/15 min.

Coin-operated Internet Terminals
“@Station” terminals are available on Terminal 1 building 1F (24 hr.), 2F (24 hr.), 4F (7:00AM to midnight), the gate area for international flights (7:00AM to 10:00PM), the Terminal 2 general area, the gate area for international flights, and the gate area for domestic flights (All 5:00AM to midnight). 100 yen/10 min.

PC Desks
There are 1 to 4 booths next to some of the “@Station” locations with power outlets for PCs. Laptops may be brought in and used here with free Wi-Fi.

5) Free Wi-Fi

Free Wi-Fi is available in all areas of the Terminal 1 building (excluding some routes used for international arrivals), all areas in the Aeroplaza building, and all areas in the Terminal 2 building.

7) Tourist Information

Kansai Tourist Information Center is located at the center of the first floor in the Terminal 1 building. In addition to providing maps, pamphlets and other information published by16 prefectures and cities in Kansai, the Center provides information about tourist spots, traditional and non-traditional events, dining and shopping in Kansai and beyond in English, Chinese, and Korean. The reception desk is open from 7:00AM to 10:00PM. Open year round.


 

Naha Airport Information

Naha Airport is an airport which is located in Naha, Okinawa Prefecture. It is divided into an International Terminal Building, a Domestic Terminal Building, and a terminal dedicated for LCC flights. A free shuttle bus runs from the Domestic Terminal to the International and LCC terminals. The monorail station connects with the second floor of the Domestic Terminal, and there are buses arriving at and departing from both the Domestic and International terminals.

The Departures Lobby is on the second floor of the International Terminal Building and the Arrivals Lobby is on the first floor of the Passenger Terminal Building.

2) Access From the Airport

●Monorail
Use the connecting walkway from the Departures Lobby on the second floor of the International Terminal to the Yui Rail Naha Airport Station. From 6:00am to midnight there are 3–10 trains per hour. From here it takes 12 minutes to Kenchomae Station(260 yen), 16 minutes to Makishi Station(300 yen), and 27 minutes to Shuri Station(330 yen).
 
●Bus
Buses depart from the Domestic Terminal Building and stop at the International Terminal Building before going on to each destination. For route buses, go to bus stops (2) (3) and (4) on the first floor of the Domestic Terminal. It takes 20 minutes on a No. 99, 111, 113, or 120 bus to the Naha Bus Terminal. From 6:00am to 9:00pm, there are 1–4 buses per hour.

For the limousine bus that links major resort hotels in Central / Northern Okinawa, go to bus stop (12). It takes 133 minutes on the No. 120 bus to Manza Beach (1,480 yen). From 8:00am to 9:00pm, there are 1–4 buses per hour. For international flights, there is a bus station on the first floor of the terminal building.
