Takayama Station

Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama

  • TIME NEEDED:1 hour

This village with its gassho or praying-hands style buildings is listed as a world heritage site. The snow covered scenery is illuminated with lights for a designated 10 days between January and February.

Shiroyama Observatory

  • TIME NEEDED:30 min
  • COST:0 YEN

Genkina Yasaikan

  • TIME NEEDED:30 min
  • COST:500 YEN

You can buy steamed bread, cakes, and more. There are also plenty of local vegetables and pickles.

Sanmachi

  • TIME NEEDED:1 hour

Take a walk around this old town, sampling delicious finger foods like sweet dumplings and fried croquettes as you go.
You're likely to see little red dolls for sale around the area. These are sarubobo. Sarubobo is a way of saying "baby monkey" in the dialect of the Takayama area. It's said that they were originally made as playthings for children who could not go outside to play during the cold winter months. They're now also well-loved as good luck charms.

This place is famous for their ramen which uses noodles cooked to just the right texture and a delicious soy sauce soup base.

Takayama Station

Notes

The bus between Shirakawa-go and Takayama runs approximately once an hour, so be sure to check the timetable occasionally to stay on schedule. Takayama Station can be accessed from Nagoya Station by the JR limited express train, which takes approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes.
