These are the remains of the oldest Western-style shaft furnaces still existing in Japan.
These are the remains of a stone quarry and three shaft furnaces that were built in 1858. They are registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution: Iron and Steel, Shipbuilding and Coal Mining.
