A checkpoint on the Tokaido highway. The original state in which it was once used has been revived
During the age of the samurai, the shogunate government took the wives of the feudal lords of each domain and forced them to reside in Edo (current day Tokyo) as hostages. The "Hakone Checkpoint" was famous for the strict investigations of the women attempting to leave Edo that went on there.
