Snacks That Are Worth the Wait

At the top of our list are LUKE'S and PABLO. LUKE's is best known for its delicious-looking lobster rolls while PABLO's freshly baked cheese tarts have made this store a popular stop since the day it opened. If you can, try to go during the morning or on a weekday to avoid some of the crowd.

■ Instagram-Worthy Lobster Rolls at LUKE'S

This is Japan's second branch of the popular New York lobster roll restaurant LUKE'S. While the prices here are a little on the expensive side, you'll know it was worth it the moment you sink your teeth into that warm roll filled with delicious lobster. You can choose to take your roll to-go or eat it there.

Here's a mouth watering fact: the rolls used at LUKE'S are baked to order. Be sure to take a look at the cute nautical decorations as you wait for your roll!

For their regular/US size lobster roll, they pack five savory lobster claws into that freshly-baked roll and finish it off with a touch of lemon and a few other seasonings. The price? 1,580 yen.

■ Save Room for Dessert from PABLO

It's not at all uncommon to see people lining up outside of this store on the weekend. Everyone wants to sink their teeth into one of PABLO's freshly baked cheese tarts. At this store, you can choose how "done" you want your tart to be. There's the "rare" option (i.e., no-bake cheesecake) and the "medium." Whichever you choose, both are equally addicting. In addition to the tarts, PABLO sells snack-sized PABLO MINI tarts that are perfect for eating on the go as well as tarts that come in seasonal flavors.

Everything on the menu here is hand-made. You can even watch the process from the window that looks into their kitchen.

Our suggestion for a sweet treat on the go? The Uji matcha-flavored PABLO MINI (230 yen each). It's perfect pn a trip to Japan! And if you're looking to share the goodness with friends and family back at home, PABLO also has some baked goods with a long shelf-life that are perfect as souvenirs.

■ Choose Your Favorite Toppings at YO.CAFE PARTYLAND

YO.CAFE PARTYLAND is a self service-style frozen yogurt store where you can create the perfect dessert using their many options. They offer sixteen flavors of frozen yogurt and an astonishing thirty toppings! You can even customize the size. YO.CAFE PARTYLAND sells their desserts at 2.2 yen per gram. ■ Fresh From the Oven Castella from a Long-Standing Store

Castella Ginso opened its main store in Osaka all the way back in 1952 and has been delighting patrons ever since. There is a cafe space on the second floor where you can enjoy your castella cake along with a drink. Our recommendation here is the Kamadashi Castella. Available only from their Shinsaibashi Location, they achieve the perfect balance between fluffy and dense. If you're lucky, you might be able to see them making the castella in the back!

They also sell individually wrapped castella in an attractive box, making it a good choice for a souvenir.

■ A Taste of the U.S.: CAMDEN’S BLUE STAR DONUTS

If you head down a particular side street off the the shopping arcade, you'll see a fancy white shop selling donuts. This is CAMDEN’S BLUE STAR DONUTS, a U.S. store that opened up its first street-level store in 2016. This store has twelve varieties of donuts to choose from and all of them are free of any preservatives or artificial colors. There are also seasonal ones for you to enjoy!

We recommend enjoying your donut at the store, which has a standing eating space, along with a cup of coffee.

The top left donut in the photo below is their most popular: the Cointreau Creme Brulee (410 yen). It comes with a tube of cointreau to inject into your donut when you’re ready to eat it. With a subdued sweetness and the flavor of this liquor, this is definitely a grownups-only donut. They also have bags and mugs for sale at the store.

While there are all sorts of stores that are creating a stir, Shinsaibashi 161 is one that you just can't miss. Inside this space there are three permanent stores. First is CANDY A☆GO☆GO, a store specializing in unique gummies and candies from around the world. Next is Calbee+where you can try freshly-fried potato chips. And last is Shinsaibashi-suji Shotengai's first Tsukiji Gindaco takoyaki store.

The second floor of Shinsaibashi 161 is reserved for pop-up stores and cafes. The duration of these events usually lasts around a month or two, so be sure to check it out when you go! Don't be surprised if you see people lining up to get in on the weekends.

After getting your fill of Disney characters, head to Sanrio Gallery, the largest Sanrio merchandise shop in all of Western Japan! All three floors of this store are packed with great items including some that are only available at the Shinsaibashi location!

Right now, renovations are underway on the Shinsaibashi location of the local landmark department store Daimaru. Construction is scheduled to be completed by the fall of 2019, meaning there'll be even more to look forward to in Shinsaibashi soon!

There are many drug stores in the shopping arcade, but none as popular as Matsumoto Kiyoshi. Instead of the store's trademark yellow color, the one here has a slightly more sophisticated appearance.

If you want some authentic Osakan souvenirs, try some sweets from Mankadou. The most popular item here is the mitarashi komochi, mochi filled with sweet mitarashi sauce (670 yen per box).
