10 Strawberry Sweets from Japanese Convenience Stores Only Available in Winter
It's strawberry season in Japan! These bright red fruits are appearing on shop shelves in every shape and form, giving us a little relief from the cold season. Limited edition strawberry sweets are all over the place right now, especially in convenience stores.
We scouted out 7-Eleven, Family Mart, and Lawson (the three main convenience store chains here) for awesome seasonal treats. Here's what we found!
Seasonal strawberry products are usually sold from mid-January through early March, so we recommend you try them out if you get the chance.
1. Ichigo ga Oishii Shirokuma |
Our first find has a cute white bear packaging. Inside, a generous portion of soft milk ice cream is topped with frozen strawberries and a rich strawberry jam-like sauce. The taste is very well balanced and the size very satisfying.
2. Glico Palitte Strawberry & Chocolat |
Next up we have a limited edition ice cream by Glico. The strawberry soft cream pairs greatly with the chocolate coating and that nice waffle cone is filled to the very bottom. A great mix of soft and crunchy textures.
3. Ichigo no Parfait |
by Family Mart
Family Mart seduced us with this multi-layered parfait. We have strawberry jelly, strawberry mousse, sponge cake and strawberry sauce, topped with whipped cream and fresh strawberries. The acidity of the strawberries keeps the sweetness in check.
4. Premium Roll Cake - Ichigozukushi Roll Cake with Amaou Strawberry |
We continue with one of Lawson's popular sweets, the roll cake. This seasonal version uses a variety of strawberry called Amaou, from Fukuoka Prefecture. The outer part is a super-fluffy cake made using strawberry puree. Then we have a layer of delicate whipped cream and custard cream, ending with Amaou strawberry puree at the center topped with a raw strawberry.
5. Ichigo Sandwich |
by Family Mart
Fruit sandwiches might sound like an odd thing to some of us westerners, but in Japan they can be found next to "regular" sandwiches in most stores. So of course we had to grab one of these strawberry versions. They contain fresh strawberries with whipped cream and custard cream. The precision of the cut and attention to detail is always amazing. The soft texture and light taste will have you finishing these before you even realize it.
by Natural Lawson
Convenience store price: 130 yen
This Yogurt drink by Natural Lawson comes with a thick straw to let you suck up all those delicious pieces of strawberry. It has a well-balanced taste and makes for a healthier snack, with some nice vitamin C.
7. Meltykiss Fruity Strawberry |
Every year, meiji sells some strawberry limited edition chocolate from November to March. The package says "a melt-in-the-mouth feeling like snow..." and that's exactly what it happens when you put one in your mouth. For those who like the combination of chocolate and strawberry, this is the sweet for you. There is a pocket version as well, perfect for when you feel like that little something.
8. Kuchidoke Chocolate Ichigo no Dars |
Dars is one of the most popular chocolate treats in Japan, so we couldn't miss this strawberry special. The classic milk chocolate bites are filled with a very genuine-tasting strawberry filling. The filling has little strawberry pieces in it. These bites are perfect to share with a friend.
9. Country Ma'am - Fukuoka Prefecture Amaou Strawberry |
Convenience store price: 278 yen
Country Ma'am are a series of delicious chewy chocolate chip cookies. They come in a variety of flavors, and often have special limited versions. This one is made with frozen strawberry juice and jam, and it's filled with white chocolate chips.
10. Milky Amaou Strawberry - bag |
Convenience store price: 130 yen
Finally, we tried this strawberry candy by Fujiya. As soon as we opened the bag we were overwhelmed by the sweet and sour fragrance of strawberries. The candies are soft, and as soon as you bite them a rich strawberry sauce fills your mouth with the taste of spring.
Japanese convenience stores are a treasure cove for seasonal sweets. It's always fun to search for new snacks to try, and between the three main chains alone the variety is huge. There are so many more sweets that we couldn't fit in this article, so make sure you explore the stores during this period and pick up your favorite strawberry treats!
