Where the Mountains and Sea Meet in Yoshino-Kumano National Park

The Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trails are a World Heritage that many travelers set out to visit at least once in their lifetime. In Wakayama Prefecture, home to the Kumano Kodo, there is another spot that is now attracting attention. Cape Tenjinzaki is known as "Japan's Uyuni Salt Flat".

When certain conditions are met, you can see a spectacular mirror-like view of the sky and sea combined, just like the Uyuni Salt Lake. The conditions under which the phenomenon appears are listed in the "Tenjinzaki Recommendation Calendar" on the  Tanabe City Kumano Tourism Bureau official website. (Japanese-only)

The area around Tanabe Bay, where Cape Tenjinzaki is located, has a rich ecosystem that includes beautiful corals, and is famous as the pioneer site of the Japan National Trust. You will encounter breathtaking scenery that can only be found here, protected by the local people.

Near Cape Tenjinzaki, the  Hikiiwa-gun Rocks are recommended for easy hiking. They are part of the Yoshino-Kumano National Park, and although they are less than 200 meters above sea level, you can enjoy dynamic rocky mountains and a panoramic view of Tanabe Bay.
