Enjoy to the fullest teamLab Borderless and public art! Art tour at Azabudai Hills
Tokyo’s new spot, Azabudai Hills, opened in November 2023.This multi-use complex offers luxury brand shops, restaurants and cafés, and Aman’s luxury hotel Janu Tokyo, as well as greenery and art. There are many things to see and do, but of particular note are the art experiences! We will introduce three art spots centering around teamLab Borderless, which has reopened after being relocated from Odaiba. It is conveniently only about 30 minutes from Tokyo Station, so be sure to pay a visit.
One of the largest in Japan! You can take in more than 70 teamLab works!
teamLab Borderless is a digital art museum born from art group teamLab’s concept of a museum without a map. Here, visitors can view a collection of more than 70 works, including new works on display for the first time in the world.
These beautiful works of art are constantly changing, as if they had a will of their own. And, as the name borderless suggests, the works are not limited to one place but can move between multiple spaces and mix with each other. Enjoy spectacles that can only be seen at that moment.
Check before you visit! Tips for enjoying teamLab Borderless 120%
■ Make plenty of time!
teamLab Borderless is a museum without a map. Indulge in this experience themed on wandering, exploring, and discovering within this world without boundaries by going back and forth from place to place as you explore. Since there are many works, we recommend that you allow at least two hours to look around.
Note that visitors can leave their baggage in lockers for free before entering. Suitcases can also be stored there, so please take advantage of this and allow yourself to explore lightly.
■ White-colored clothing is recommended!
With digital art, the works change in conjunction with the movements of people. White or light-colored clothing will make the imaging look more beautiful. And, some of the rooms in the exhibition use mirrors on the floor, so you may want to put on a petticoat underneath if you are wearing a skirt. It is also recommended that you come in your most comfortable shoes.
■ Learn more about the works with our official teamLab app!
The official website offers a guide app where you can read about the concept of the teamLab Borderless works. If you download it in advance, you will be able to understand the works more deeply.

teamLab’s world view from the entrance
teamLab Borderless is located on the B1 floor of Azabudai Hills Garden Plaza B. It is directly accessible from Exit 5 of Kamiyacho Station on the Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line, so please follow the directions from there.
At the entrance, the words teamLab★Borderless are distorted.
This work is entitled People Don’t See the World as through a Camera. If you stand at the position marked Photo Spot and hold your camera at a height of about 150 cm to take a picture, the letters will appear in the space! This thought-provoking work shows how the world seen through the human eye and that seen through a lens are different.
They are a must-see! teamLab’s representative works
Proceeding through the pitch-dark space, a door opened and a world of extreme colors opened up! The beauty of it took our breath away. This one is entitled “Flowers and People, Cannot be Controlled but Live Together – A Whole Year per Hour.”
As we continued on, flowers began to bloom at our feet. The flowers of the four seasons bloom and fall repeatedly.
These scenic spaces change in response to the movements of visitors, as in by touching the randomly appearing white crow to turn it into a flower and touching a butterfly only to see it to die. You never know when the crows and butterflies may appear, so please wait and watch the shifting artwork carefully.
And the scents are quite nice. Each room has been made to have a different scent. Enjoy the imaging and music along with the fragrances.
Some areas are mirrored, making it easy to take selfies!
“Universe of Water Particles on a Rock where People Gather” is a work themed on waterfalls. The various imaging changes according to the movements of people, so please go ahead and move around actively.
As one walks along, a water stream forms behind them.
A waterfall cascades down toward the “Rock where People Gather” in the center. When you go near the wall, the water flows away from people.
The flowers are gradually coming into bloom. As we were thinking how beautiful is was, a white crow flew by from “Flowers and People, Cannot be Controlled but Live Together – A Whole Year per Hour.”
Here too the crow turns into flowers when touched. In this way, parts of different works come and go, and the works influence each other, creating a borderless world.
Visitors can also enjoy pictures that change in accordance with their movements, such as when they touch a kanji character falling from above and the imaging expresses the meaning of that character.
“Infinite Crystal World” is a space filled with countless pillars of light. The type of light switches after a short span of time, so you can enjoy numerous variations of radiance.
Not to be missed! World premiere of original works
“Bubble Universe” is a new work to replace the “Forest of Resonating Lamps” at Odaiba.
As you proceed into the myriad of glowing spheres, the light from the lamps spreads to neighboring lamps in response to people being present. You never know which color it will be, and that exact momentary spectacle will never be seen again.
Really magical. It is beautiful everywhere you look.
A soap bubble-like circle can sometimes be seen in the sphere. Please look for it!
In “Microcosmoses – Wobbling Light,” countless wobbling lights continually float through space that seems to spread out infinitely.
In “Black Waves: Born in the Darkness, Return to the Darkness,” the various works that make up the teamLab Borderless world move from room to room and enter the exhibition.
Visitors can delight in the wave-like movements floating in the pitch-dark space along with the birth and death of flowers.
In “Light Vortex,” a huge light sculpture is created by the outflowing light, surging, spreading, and swallowing people. It is a mysterious experience, as if you are being sucked into outer space.
Enjoy limited time exhibits. Azabudai Hills Gallery
The facility also has a gallery within. Starting in May 2024, we will be holding an exhibition by Alexander Calder titled ``Calder: Swaying, Feeling, Japan''. This will be the first exhibition in Tokyo in about 35 years.Exhibits change regularly, so please check the official website.
Take an art stroll with coffee in hand. The public art is also worthy of your time.
The Central Square in the center of the building is a park-like space with an orchard, river, and seasonal plants. Public art is interspersed throughout the square.

In addition, Olafur Eliasson’s “A cycle of harmony of interconnected nows (2023)” is in the Mori JP Tower Office Lobby. Please try to find it.
And Azabudai Hills has a slightly different appearance. The unique architecture and landscaping of the lower level were designed by Thomas Heatherwick of the UK, who also designed the torch tower for the London Olympics.
There are also spaces to sit and rest in the Central Square and the basement of the Garden Plaza.
On a nice day, take out a cup of coffee from the café and relax.
Kawazu cherry blossoms were in bloom in early March at the time of our coverage.
Please visit Azabudai Hills to indulge in experiencing art in the heart of Tokyo.
Although we have focused on art, Azabudai Hills also offers a wide variety of shops and restaurants, so we encourage you to visit the area.
