Used Clothing and Kimono
HARAJUKU CHICAGO
If you’re in the market for authentic kimono that won’t blow your entire shopping budget, then check out used clothing store HARAJUKU CHICAGO.
Like any good furugiya or used clothing store, HARAJUKU CHICAGO offers plenty of western clothing and accessories from Japanese, American, and European brands. But rather than just stocking a bunch of old clothes, each store sells items that compliment the personality of the local area.
But what makes this chain of second-hand shops even more special is its attention to what they call the “real” vintage clothing of Japan: the kimono. Here you can find a wide selection of gorgeous vintage kimono, obi, and various kimono accessories at shockingly reasonable prices.
Can’t tell the difference between a kimono and a yukata? Don’t worry! A helpful point for budding kimono enthusiasts is that all the different bits and pieces of kimono are labeled in both Japanese and English.
With their large inventory, you’re likely to find pieces that are a good match for you. Keep in mind, though, that these are vintage kimono. Vintage kimono tend to run a bit on the small side, especially when it comes to sleeves lenghth. Showing a bit of wrist isn’t the end of the world, of course. Also, if you’re the crafty type, you might just want to make a whole new piece using kimono or obi as your raw materials!
There are three other store locations in Tokyo and one in Kyoto. Please check their homepage for details.
