Cosplay experience in Akihabara

Cosplay Experience in Akihabara

There's a natural appeal to cosplaying in Japan, but managing the logistics of transporting costumes and accessories, finding a good location, and arranging photography can be a little daunting. Instead of trying to manage all this on your own, why not try a cosplay experience?

Choosing a costume

You can find costumes for both classic and recent characters. Here we have examples from Sailor Moon and Attack on Titian.

Studio CROWN in Akihabara is a photography studio that caters to cosplayers. They have costume and wig rentals as well as colored contacts for sale. The studio also has four themed sets and various props for cosplayers to enjoy a proper photo shoot.

For visitors to Japan, they offer special photography packages, the most luxurious of which includes the rental of a costume and accessories, getting one’s hair and makeup done, and a photography session.

Dressed! Now it's off to makeup.

My first task when I arrived was to choose my costume. I was impressed by their selection, which ranged from classic characters to those from series as new as Attack on Titan. At first I thought I was going to appeal to the nostalgia of my 90s childhood and go with Sailor Moon. Then I saw Rurouni Kenshin’s red hakama and my heart was won. I took my costume and changed in the studio’s spacious changing room.

Once I emerged, I met my special guest makeup artist: a cosplayer who goes by the handle Chamomile. We discussed the plan of attack for my makeup. As I was game for anything, we decided to use tape to give me a more masculine jaw line. After that, Chamomile got to work transforming me from a modern girl into a legendary samurai. The results were amazing.

Being Kenshin at Studio CROWN

"Sessha, rurouni..." Having my pictures taken as Kenshin was really fun!

From there, we moved to the Japanese-themed set and started taking pictures. The pictures taken with a traditional camera as well as those done with a smart phone were both excellent. It was fun to use the various props for the photos like the paper umbrellas.

This was a fantastic experience. The staff was friendly and the results were amazing.

Sadly, all things must come to an end. I returned to the changing room, removed my wig, my makeup, and then my costume. The studio supplies some makeup removing supplies, but I recommend bringing products you like as you’ll need to use a lot to properly take off the massive amount of makeup involved in the process. Also, keep in mind that there is no sink in the facility, but there is a restroom in the hallway where you can properly wash your face. Bring your own face towel for that.

Whether you’ve been cosplaying for years or have always wanted to try, this is a great way to experience Japan’s cosplay culture as part of a day spent in Akihabara.
